Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Teaira McCowan has been named the SEC Player of the Week. This marks the third such award for the Mississippi State junior, the most in the league. As for the Freshman of the Week award, Texas A&M sensation Chennedy Carter was given the nod for the second time.

McCowan’s dominance for Mississippi State continued last week as she averaged 33.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and shot 79.5 percent from the field in two Bulldog wins. Against Mississippi Valley State, McCowan scored 41 points (the 8th most in school history) on 19 made field goals (second most in school history) all while playing in just three quarters. The win sealed a perfect non-conference record for State, the third time in four years the program has done so. As an encore, McCowan registered 26 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Georgia, the first win for Mississippi State in Athens since 2002. The double-double was McCowan’s 11th of the season and 7th in a row. The double-double streak was actually reached it just one half as she had 15 points and 12 boards at the break. Mississippi State is now 15-0, the third best start in school history.

For Texas A&M, Chennedy Carter had one of the breakout performances of the year so far that nearly resulted in a big upset. Opening their season at South Carolina, A&M watched their freshman sensation score 36 points, the fourth most in program history, as their upset bid fell just short in a 61-59 loss. The 36 points are the second most by a freshman in school history trailing only herself when she scored 46 points against Southern Cal in early December.

She is now the fifth player in Aggie history to have three or more 30+ point games in her career and she did it in just 15 games. Carter also had 28 points and seven assists (plus no turnovers) in a 79-57 win earlier in the week against SMU. For the week, Carter averaged 32 points, 3 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2 steals. Texas A&M is 11-4 on the season.
