It’s week four of the SEC weekly awards and this week both were given to players within the state of Mississippi. Victoria Vivians of Mississippi State was named Player of the Week for the first time this season and Promise Taylor of Ole Miss earned her second Freshman of the Week award.

Vivians’ line for the week was impressive, averaging 23 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 apg and 3 spg. The effort by the senior guard from Carthage, Mississippi helped the Bulldogs win both of their games this week as the team moved to 8-0. After a cakewalk win against Louisiana-Lafayette, Vivians really exploded when MSU needed her most. At home against a tough Oklahoma State squad, Vivians poured in 30 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including 17 in the second half, and also hauled in eight rebounds. For the season she is shooting 52% from the field and 37% from three, both marks that would be her career high if they were to hold. Her efficiency from the field has been huge in helping the MSU offense rank 5th in margin per 100 possessions (per herhoopstats.com). For her career, Vivians has now surpassed the 1,900 point mark, just the third player in program history to do so (LaToya Thomas and Tan White).

Just about two hours up the road from MSU, another player within the state line was having herself a great week as well. Promise Taylor notched her first career double-double, recording 15 points and 11 rebounds in Ole Miss’ win over Arkansas State. For the week, which also included a win over Alcorn State, Taylor averaged 10.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg while shooting an impressive 75% from the field. In the win over Alcorn State, Taylor blocked six shots, the most by a Rebel since 2008 when Shaun Goff blocked six against the same Alcorn State program. Taylor, a native of Issaquah, Washington, is leading the SEC with 3.3 bpg and is second in field goal percentage at 68%. Ole Miss is now 7-1 on the season.
