B1G: Kelsey Mitchell makes history as she is honored Player of the Week

Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell continues to dominate the Big Ten as as she is this week’s Big Ten player of the week. Mitchell earned the MVP award at the Play4Kay Showcase in Las Vegas as she averaged 30.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists as the Buckeyes won the Play4Kay Showcase.  Minnesota freshman guard Destiny Pitts was named Freshman of the Week.

The senior guard scored a season-high 37 points against Stanford and scoring 19 of 20 free throws, tying the Big Ten and school records for free throws made. Along with that, Mitchell now holds the Division I record for three-point field goals made. Mitchell (404) now passed Uconn’s Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (398). This is her ninth Player of the Week honor, tying for fourth in Big Ten history. (Minnesota’s Lindsay Whalen with nine).

Pitts has become a clear leader in her young career at Minnesota. She led the Gophers to win their first Thanksgiving title in nine years. Pitts scored a team-high 22 points in their championship game against UNLV. She also scored a double-double with 18 and 13 rebounds in their win over Wake Forest in the first game.  This is her second career Player of the Week award. She won the honors last week on November 20, 2017.
