Ekaterinburg was born with her and won two EuroLeague and six Russian League championships on her watch.
Ekat didn’t want play to her in the WNBA two seasons ago, and paid her well to avoid it, with seven-figure deal to keep her resting during the summer of 2015.
But now, at age 35, this might be Taurasi’s final overseas season, she said. She’s played with Candace Parker for four seasons and Brittney Griner now.
Which leads to the question: who will Ekat find to replace her? Maya Moore, Diamond DeShields, Allie Quigley, Elena Delle Donne? There are many candidates.
Taurasi’s European resume is second to none. Previously, she played for Spartak Vidnoje and won four EuroLeague titles, part of Taurasi’s record for the most EuroLeague championships, six in her career. After Spartak, Taurasi agreed to a deal with Fenerbahce and played with her current wife, Penny Taylor.
The following year, she joined to Galatasaray Istanbul, who have a rivalry with Fener. There she won the Turkish Cup and left the team after falling short of a EuroLeague championship.
Taurasi is known as the player who gets the most money to play overseas for years. It is estimated to be $1.5-2 million per season.
Now, this undercovered part of her career may be nearing an end. It is worth paying attention to, and not just because any opportunity to see Diana Taurasi play ought to be embraced.
