Phoenix Murcury center Brittney Griner left Friday night’s game against the Minnesota Lynx early in the 4th quarter with a knee and ankle injury. According to the Mercury, Griner has been diagnosed with a left knee bone bruise and right ankle sprain, causing her to miss a predicted 3-4 weeks of activity.
Prior to being escorted out of the game in obvious pain, Griner played just over 24 minutes and led all scorers with 15 points. She was well on her way to the stellar performance she had the week before, which earned her Player of the Week honors, and helped the Mercury to a four game winning streak.
With the WNBA All-Star game fast approaching, news of the injury definitely counts out Griner for participating this year. Though she did not receive a starting spot, it was likely she would have been selected as a reserve. She alone, though, as several other players have undergone injuries as of late.
The Phoenix Mercury fell to the Minnesota Lynx 88-71 and will face them again on Sunday, July 16 but this time, they will not have Griner in the mix. Griner will undergo constant evaluation of her knee and ankle, and her playing status will be updated accordingly.
