Jonquel Jones and Sylvia Fowles named WNBA Players of the Month for June
Connecticut’s Jonquel Jones and Minnesota’s Sylvia Fowles have been named WNBA Players of the Month for June in the Eastern and Western conferences, respectively.
That’s back-to-back honors for the veteran Fowles, who also won the award in May. She has claimed seven Player of the Month titles in her career, one behind all-time record-holder Tina Charles.
Over seven games in June, Fowles averaged 21.3 points and 9.6 rebounds. She displayed incredible consistency, scoring in double figures and grabbing at least seven rebounds in every game. Fowles also led the WNBA in field goal percentage for the month, shooting 70.2 percent. Most importantly, the Lynx went 6-1 in that span.
Jones, who earned her first-ever Player of the Month honor, was just as important to her team’s success. The Sun went 6-2 in June as Jones scored 15.6 per game and led the East with 11.9 rebounds. She had a career game against Atlanta on June 10 (20 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks), good for one of her five June double-doubles.
Over the course of the month, Jones also helped the Sun turn their season around. Connecticut entered June just 1-5, but is now 8-7 with wins over WNBA heavyweights New York (twice) and Minnesota.
Jones’ teammates Jasmine Thomas and Alyssa Thomas were also considered for the Eastern Conference award, along with Charles, Shavonte Zellous, and Elena Delle Donne. Skyler Diggins-Smith, Glory Johnson, Breanna Stewart, Brittney Griner, Diana Tuarasi, Chelsea Gray, Nneka Ogwumike, and Candace Parker all received consideration in the West.
Both Jones and Fowles were also featured in The Summitt’s 2017 WNBA All-Star ballots.
