A pair of familiar faces—one now the most familiar face ever for the award—in Tina Charles and Sylvia Fowles earned WNBA Player of the Week honors in the Eastern and Western Conferences, respectively.
Charles is now a 23-time winner of the award, making her the most celebrated player in WNBA history on a weekly basis, passing Tamika Catchings. She scored a career-high 36 points last week, yet won this award for the two games that followed, in which she averaged 19.5 points and 14.5 rebounds.
Notably, the turning point in New York’s 94-86 win Sunday over the Seattle Storm came when Charles fed teammate Kiah Stokes with a pass out of the high post, leading to Breanna Stewart’s sixth foul.
As for Fowles, she completed a 25.5 point, 10 rebound average weekly campaign, helping her Lynx to another two victories in their 9-0 start. She also averaged 3.5 assists per game, a tribute to her varied skills.
The pair of dominant bigs and early contenders for WNBA MVP have each now won the award multiple times this season. It is the second such honor for Charles, third for Fowles.
Charles next plays Wednesday night against the Sun in Connecticut, while Fowles and the Lynx host the San Antonio Stars Thursday night.
