Diana Taurasi ties WNBA 3-point record in Phoenix win
Diana Taurasi tied the WNBA all-time three-point record on Saturday as the Phoenix Mercury throttled the Dallas Wings, 107-65.
With a three midway through the third quarter off an assist from Stephanie Talbot, Taurasi matched Katie Smith with 906 made threes.
Here’s the record-tying play:
After the game, Taurasi told reporters that Smith was a hero of hers growing up, and talked about how much the moment meant to her.
"“I always talk about Katie (Smith) being my biggest heroes growing up, watching basketball, her work ethic. I got to share the court with her at the Olympics. to be tied with her right now is kind of cool. If we could just say end it there and we both be on top we would both be pretty happy with that.”"
Of course it doesn’t end there for Taurasi. After a slow start to this season, she has scored more points in every game than the one before it. The 13-year veteran is the Mercury’s second-leading scorer and best free throw shooter in the early going. As a team, Phoenix has sputtered to a 3-2 start, but perhaps broke through with their 42-point win against Dallas. It was the largest margin of victory in franchise history, and the team appears hungry for more:
