Tori McCoy, who transferred out of Ohio State after just one season, will continue her college career at Marquette.
McCoy’s decision to attend Marquette was officially announced on Sunday through multiple tweets, including one that appears to belong to her father, Tim.
McCoy will sit out next season due to transfer rules. She’ll have three years of eligibility remaining when she resumes play in the 2018-19 season. Technically speaking, Marquette currently doesn’t have a scholarship available for McCoy for that academic year, but that scenario presumes no other changes are made with the roster; someone else on Marquette could transfer out or end her eligibility early. Whatever happens, a future development is likely as McCoy works her way to the Golden Eagles roster.
In terms of potential, McCoy has plenty to offer for Marquette. In her freshman season at Ohio State, the 6’4″ forward averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. She also led the team in blocks with 59 and started 10 of the 35 games she played, helping the Buckeyes reach the Sweet 16 in this year’s NCAA tournament. McCoy’s shooting clip was impressive, posting a field goal percentage of .629.
However, McCoy was apparently unhappy with how she was utilized at Ohio State, according to a report last month from The News-Gazette. Her skills in the post are clearly evident, but she yearns for a perimeter role as well.
Coincidentally, Marquette was among McCoy’s original list of finalists before settling on Ohio State. That gives the Illinois native some familiarity with her new surroundings, and Marquette could get a highly versatile talent in the years to come.
