Destiny Slocum, the 2017 WBCA National Freshman of the Year, will build a new lodge at Oregon State.
Slocum announced her decision through her Twitter page Monday night. Due to NCAA transfer rules, she won’t be eligible to play until the 2018-19 season, but she will have three years of eligibility remaining when her college career resumes.
In her freshman season at Maryland, Slocum ranked second in the Big Ten in assists, averaging 6.0 per game. She earned two double-doubles in the conference portion of the season, and showcased her potential in a regular season meeting with UConn, racking up 23 points and seven assists.
Although Oregon State will have to wait to utilize Slocum’s services, her arrival offers an instant boost at the point guard position. With Sydney Wiese now a member of the Los Angeles Sparks, Slocum figures to be a future centerpiece for the Beavers. She should also have reliable teammates to work with; next year’s freshmen class for Oregon State includes Taya Corosdale and Aleah Goodman. Both were ranked in the top 100 by ESPN HoopGurlz.
Oregon State won the regular season Pac-12 title this past season, and came close to doing the same in the conference tournament. Thanks to the influx of talent over the next few years, the Beavers stand to be a contender for a considerable time.
