The Money Line: Odds, Prediction for WNBA Most Valuable Player
Kayla McBride (+2500)
Though it is usually frowned upon to include MVP candidates from losing teams, I’m going to make an exception here. The Stars weren’t expected to have a great season last year, but their expectations went down even more when the 2015 All Star went down with a season-ending foot injury after just 17 games. While the greatest long shot to get MVP in this group, Moriah Jefferson proved to be a more than capable point guard, and there is more talent on the roster with the likes Monique Currie and Kelsey Plum (probably?). If new head coach Vickie Johnson can find a way to sneak into the playoffs, McBride will be a huge reason why.
The Pick
Anytime you’re trying to make a season long prediction, you look for value. Fortunately, due to the extreme unpredictability of MVP races, you can get that with basically any player in the league. For me, I’ll take my chances with Elena Delle Donne. With arguably the best supporting cast stylistically that she has ever had, I expect tons of open looks all over the court for not only Delle Donne, but all of her Mystics teammates. In addition, after missing the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, the win total in Washington is likely going to take a huge jump up, and we all know how important winning is to MVP voters.
