San Antonio Stars

PICKS

Round 1 Pick 1 Kelsey Plum, G, Washington

Round 1 Pick 5 Nia Coffey, F, Northwestern

Round 3 Pick 1 Schaquilla Nunn, F, Tennessee

Look, anytime you get the clear top player in the draft, as the Stars did in Plum, it’s a good night. But the roster in the light of day has the same question it did prior to the pick, a reason why the Stars entertained trade offers right up through making the choice: how do you deploy Plum, Moriah Jefferson and Kayla McBride, three elite talents who should all be All Stars with proper utilization, without wasting one or more of them? It’ll be up to new coach Vickie Johnson to figure that out. And the good news is that too much talent is a problem most coaches would want, while Coffey is the projectable three who can shore up San Antonio’s defense and even play some four in a small lineup. And Nunn is a solid finisher and plus rebounder who can push Erika De Souza in training camp for backup spot to Kayla Alexander.
