McDonald’s All-American Nyah Green will redshirt for Louisville

Louisville head coach Jeff Walz announced Monday that freshman Nyah Green, a McDonald’s All-American, will redshirt this season.

Green chose Louisville over LSU, Baylor, South Carolina and Tennessee. The 6-foot-1 guard from Allen, Texas was tabbed as the 12th best prospect in the 2019 class by ESPN. Ramani Parker, a 6-foot-4 four-star recruit, will also redshirt.

“They’ve both done extremely well, but we had a lot of unforeseen circumstances that came about since their signing,” Walz told 247Sports. “Both of these young women would play as freshmen, but it’s a matter of how much and we agreed this is the best path for them.”

Louisville won its opening game of the season, beating Western Kentucky 75-56. Georgia Tech transfer Elizabeth Dixon had 10 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

Extras

  • Syracuse guard Tiana Mangakahia has finished chemotherapy and had surgery on Wednesday. On Thursday, she was declared cancer-free. As Quentin Hillsman put it, “I wouldn’t say battling breast cancer, she’s been beating breast cancer.”
  • Wes Moore said Wednesday that Elle Sutphin and Jada Rice are considering redshirting this year. Sutphin was tabbed as ESPN’s 39th best recruit for the class of 2020, but reclassified and graduated high school early to join the Wolfpack this season. Rice is a sophomore who played just 74 minutes over 22 games last season.
  • UNC junior Janelle Bailey told the Associated Press this of new head coach Courtney Banghart: “She’s tough. She has a bubbly spirit no matter what, but there’s times where she really gets on us… We need both bubbly-refreshing, and we also need someone to get on us because that’s only something that’s going to help us get better.”
