Running counter to what many people figured the Minnesota Lynx would do in Maya Moore‘s absence, Cheryl Reeve instead retooled and put a playoff team on the floor in 2019. But look at her 2020 salary obligations — full-protection deals with Karima Christmas-Kelly, Damiras Dantas, Sylvia Fowles and OdysseySims, and north of $800,000 already committed to 10 players in total. Now, she has the flexibility of moving on from some of those 2020 contracts, and that number includes Moore, should she return. But it also means the core of a team that won 18 games last year, with a hopefully healthy Christmas-Kelly and Jessica Shepard, will be around, with a year of continuity under its belt. If Moore is a part of that as well, Reeve can tinker at the edges of what is clearly a championship contender on paper. So it was a rebuild of sorts, the Lynx just didn’t miss a beat while it was happening.
