12. Washington Mystics select Kaila Charles, 6’1 G/F, Maryland

Kaila Charles shot 1-for-14 from three last year, and someone who is going to need to make her living as a 2/3 in the league needs more range than that. But the scuttlebutt out of Maryland is that she’s going to do just that. And there’s every reason for optimism in the remainder of her game, from her effective dribble penetration to her absurd leaping ability, basketball IQ and above-average ability to leap into passing lanes and produce live-ball turnovers. In Washington, she’ll be surrounded by shooters, coached by a staff that brings out the best in a player’s shot, and close to her college home as she learns. That’s reason aplenty for the Mystics to pick her.
