The weekend at Women’s EuroBasket 2019
By Kim Doss
Group B: France 71, Sweden 65
Both teams had secured their entry into the knock-out stage, but France had the chance to go 3-0 in the group stage and advance directly to the quarterfinals. They accomplished the task.
The French team put on a show of balanced scoring with four players scoring in double figures and two more scoring 8 points each. Sandrine Gruda led the way with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. Bria Hartley and Valeriane Ayayi followed her with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Olivia Epoupa might have been the most impressive, though, with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and a game-high 7 assists.
Sweden was led by Elin Eldebrink’s 18 points, but Amanda Zahui B stole the show for her team. The New York Liberty center had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. She added 2 steals and 2 blocks for good measure.
France will play either Belgium or Slovenia in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Sweden plays co-host Latvia for the right to play the other co-host, Serbia.
Group D: Serbia 70, Belgium 66
Just as in the match-up between France and Sweden, Serbia and Belgium were playing to win the group. A win by Serbia meant they were the 3-0 victors of Group D. A win by Belgium would put them both at 2-1 and give Belgium the head-to-head victory.
The co-hosts of the tournament maintained their perfection and moved directly to the quarterfinals.
Emma Meesseman was the standout for Belgium once again. She led the game with 21 points and ended just one rebound shy of a double-double. Four assists, 1 steal, and 1 block completed her night. Kim Mestdagh added 15 points and Antonia Delaere contributed 12 more.
Serbia was able to depend on more balanced contributions. Jelena Brooks led the scoring with 16 points, while Aleksandra Crvendakic had a game-high 11 rebounds. Sonja Petrovic added 13 points and 7 rebounds, and Nevena Jovanovic contributed 11 points. Ana Dabovic contributed 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and one steal, and led the team in efficiency at +17.
Serbia will await the winner of Latvia and Sweden in the quarterfinals. Belgium will attempt to earn a quarterfinal berth against France when they face Slovenia on July 2.
