Do not mistake Nneka Ogwumike’s presence this early on our list for a decline in her game. Instead, when measuring value, we looked at her total contribution relative to her teammates, and thus we have her here because of the presence of her sister Chiney, Chelsea Gray, Candace Parker, Alana Beard, Maria Vadeeva — there’s a lot of talent to go around. It is extremely Nneka that she’s been only excited about the chance to play a less dominant role, something that not every MVP, as she was in 2016, would sign up for. It is worth remembering that her 2016 is one of the great single seasons not just of that year, but in league history, including an efficiency from the field that was best-ever. Her 2017 and 2018 campaigns reflect a regression to the mean, but even then, a player capable of 55% from the field, 35% from three, rebounding effectively, defending opposing bigs and maintaining a steal percentage around 3 percent is remarkably valuable. And if she is the key to incorporating and unlocking Chiney in 2019, well, this rating is too low.
