9. Connecticut Sun: Alanna Smith, 6’4 F, Stanford
This feels low, honestly. Smith is shooting 47.9 percent from three-point range and 54.5 percent overall from the field, as a high-usage focal point of Stanford’s offense. She outdueled Brown and Lauren Cox in Baylor’s only loss of the season, and her defensive metrics are similarly impressive—block rate north of 8 percent, steal rate above 2 percent. She’s a great fit for Curt Miller’s system in Connecticut, and it is easy to see her soaking up minutes at both the three and four spots, or even making it easier for the Sun to break their logjam at the five with Jonquel Jones and Chiney Ogwumike. Either way, Smith on a rookie contract is going to be a big deal as Miller and the Sun face some big salary cap decisions in 2019-2020. And if she keeps playing like this, she won’t be around by the time Connecticut picks.
