2018 NCAA Tournament bracket: UConn is the No. 1 overall seed, Oklahoma is in, and Rutgers is out
We have a field.
The NCAA Tournament bracket was revealed Monday night and it was full of both the expected and the shocking. The No. 1 seeds were fairly obvious beforehand and the committee didn’t surprise us: UConn is the top overall seed, while Mississippi State, Louisville, and Notre Dame all command their own regions.
For those looking for a UConn-Mississippi State rematch, those two are on opposite sides of the bracket, so we could get just that in the national championship game. But of course both teams will have to navigate a tough road to get there.
Apart from fellow 1s Louisville and Notre Dame, 2 seeds South Carolina, Texas, Oregon, and Baylor are all formidable opponents. In fact, if seeds hold, we could be looking at four incredible Elite Eight matchups.
While there were maybe a few small surprises in terms of seed lines, the real shock of the Selection Show came on the bubble. Oklahoma, which went 16-14, was given a 12 seed and an at-large bid. The Sooners are the first team since 2005 to get an at-large with only 16 wins and they went just 1-8 against RPI top-50 teams. Meanwhile Rutgers was left out despite five wins against top-50 teams and two more against Purdue, ranked 62nd.
But the beauty of the NCAA Tournament is that once the games begin, the controversy is forgotten. That’s because we have 63 games ahead of us and a whole lot of time on our couches doing nothing but watching games and avoiding social interaction. I can’t wait.
