Starkville:

1. Mississippi State (SEC)
16. Jackson State (SWAC)

8. California
9. NC State

Why do the Bulldogs deserve the fourth 1 seed? Well, for starters, they haven’t lost yet. They’re also 7-0 vs. RPI top 50 teams and 10-0 against the top 100. A return trip to the Final Four would first require a pair of home wins, however. The Wolfpack have lost three in a row and are trending in the wrong direction. Like Cal, they are in desperate need of another quality win if they want to stay in the field.

Piscataway:

4. Rutgers
13. Mercer (Southern)

5. West Virginia
12. Creighton

Rutgers is back. Three years removed from their last NCAA Tournament appearance and coming off of a six-win season, C. Vivian Stringer has her team on an absolute tear. The Scarlet Knights have won 11 in a row, but in order to stay on the 4 line and host the first two rounds, they will probably have to pick up a signature win against either Ohio State or Maryland in conference play. On the other side, we have West Virginia and Creighton. The Mountaineers don’t have a strong schedule, but give credit where it’s due: they’ve won their games.
