The question is not whether Katie Smith is ready to be a WNBA head coach, but rather why it hasn’t happened already—the New York Liberty have benefited from her wisdom, but it certainly seems like a matter of time until she is poached by a team smart enough to put her in charge. But if the Seattle job isn’t merely hers for the asking, there are plenty of other worthy assistants around who deserve interviews as well. The list should include Nicki Collen of the Sun, Bridget Pettis of the Wings, and both Bobbie Kelsey and Tonya Edwards in Los Angeles. If she’d be interested in a head coaching gig, Teresa Weatherspoon has done fantastic work for the Liberty as well, though she seems firmly ensconced in a front office role.
