5. Los Angeles Sparks (50 miles)
There are a bunch of places on Earth where a spark can exist, so this was an especially tough one to place. But I’m in a good mood and want to give the Los Angeles Sparks the benefit of every doubt. That’s why I turned to lightning, which is an extreme form of an electric spark and occurs way up there in the sky. How high up? That varies. There are three types of lightning: intra-cloud, cloud-to-cloud, and cloud-to-ground. When a cloud-to-ground strike occurs, it can trigger what’s known as a red sprite — an electrical discharge that pushes itself far above the cloud. These can reach 50 miles in altitude and I would appreciate it if the Los Angeles WNBA team changed its name to the Los Angeles Red Sprites.
