WATCH: Katie Smith talks New York Liberty, WNBA evolution

An underrated reason for the recent success of the New York Liberty is the team’s depth—not just on the roster, but in the coaching staff, including legends like Teresa Weatherspoon and Katie Smith.

Bill Laimbeer is a championship coach, but it only begins with him. Weatherspoon is a two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and all-time great point guard, while Smith ranks fifth in league history in win shares, including six seasons in the league’s top ten.

Smith’s inside-outside game foretold where the league’s bigs have gone, and the future head coach combines her outsized knowledge with an excellent ability to communicate it. She spent some time doing just that with The Summitt, talking about both the New York Liberty’s 2017 prospects and the larger view of where the WNBA is going.
