KEY LOSSES

Statistically, the Lynx didn’t lose much, but that doesn’t make the absence of Anna Cruz and Janel McCarville less significant. Not having Cruz opened up a space for Alexis Jones, the team’s first-round draft pick, but Minnesota’s experience in the back-court drops a bit.

McCarville’s usage in 2016 was sporadic, but not enough to dampen her reputation as a strong passer in the post. Chantel Osahor, who the Lynx obtained in a trade with Chicago, could be a replacement in that capacity.

Normally, coaches aren’t considered in this category, but Jim Petersen qualifies as an exception. He stepped down after nine years as an assistant coach for Minnesota. The move is understandable as he frequently juggled his coaching duties with his broadcast responsibilities for the Timberwolves, but Petersen had a knack for developing post players. Noted for his study of the game, Petersen could enlighten athletes and reporters alike about the intricacies of post-ups and shooting motions. James Wade was hired in his place after spending four seasons with the San Antonio staff.

Of course, wins and losses aren’t credited to assistant coaches, and Reeve remains at the helm. A few differences could emerge with a change in the coaching staff, but the impact on the Lynx will likely be minimal.
